MKTG 50065 - Marketing and Advertising Integration
I've taught and worked in the marketing field for more than 30 years. Marketing is a vital aspect of any operation. Whether an organization is large or small, domestic or international, profit or not-for-profit it must market itself to survive. It is a critical component on survival in any area and students require a solid grounding in this discipline in order to be successful in the working world.

How long have you been with Sheridan?

I joined Sheridan in the fall of 1997 as a part-time instructor and was hired full-time in the fall of 2000. I have been a program coordinator since 2002.

What is your favourite part about Sheridan?

Sheridan is an excellent community in which people dedicated to teaching and learning can work and contribute. Sheridan remains as one of the largest, most successful colleges in the system largely due to the strength and diversity of its programs. Students can be educated across a wide variety of disciplines and credential levels through the (approximately) 130 programs we offer across four credential levels: certificate, diploma, degree and graduate certificate.

What do you think is the greatest strength of the post-grad program?

Providing the necessary skills to be job-ready upon graduation, which is backed up by an in-house cooperative education program that assists graduates to find work in their area of interest in the advertising industry.

What advice would you give to someone who is considering a post-grad education in Advertising?

If you're certain that advertising is the field you want to work in, you will be well-prepared for it by studying at the post graduate level at Sheridan.

Lara Shead

When did you first discover an interest in Advertising?

I am one of the few that can say I was a member of the inaugural class of the Post-Graduate Advertising Management program. Prior to completing my Post Grad, I graduated from Sheridan's Business Administration - Advanced Marketing Diploma program. At the time of graduation, I really wasn't sure where I fit in and decided why not explore Advertising? And I'm so glad I did!

Why did you choose Sheridan?

Sheridan has a great reputation across the board. A few of its major selling points for me was that they always seemed a step ahead with their program offerings, facilities and faculty, many of which are still working in the field.

What is the #1 thing you took away from your post grad experience?

It is essential to have clear objectives! I walked away with the adequate tools to work on both the client and agency sides.

What advice would you give to someone who is considering a post grad program?

Go for it! It's a great program, which will open doors to so many aspects of Advertising and Marketing.

How has the completion of the program affected your career?

I believe the completion of this program helped to broaden my understanding of how Advertising fits under the Marketing umbrella. It has made me a better Marketer having been exposed to both the agency and client worlds.

Where do you work and what is your current position?

Currently I work on the client side, as Marketing Coordinator at goeasyLtd.

goeasy is the parent company to easyhome, our retail lease-to-own business with over 180 stores across the country and easyfinancial, our alternative financial services business that has over 200 branches across Canada.

I work closely with both businesses in the development and coordination of all marketing collateral, the implementation and distribution along with providing support to all stores and branches with ANYTHING marketing related.

What is your favourite part of the job?

Getting to be a part of the evolution of our campaigns from beginning to end.

Faculty Profile: Maureen Garbutt

Maureen Garbutt
Brief Bio
After starting my career in television production, I moved to the Radio Marketing Bureau where we provided support to Radio Advertising Sales Executives through research, creative and industry trends.  Enjoying this, I decided to try my hand in Radio Advertising Sales and worked at several stations in the GTA.  This career was very rewarding and I thrived in this environment through the business relationships built with my clients and colleagues alike.  There was such variety in this role, excitement and learning was always on the agenda.

After hearing of the opportunity at Sheridan College in the Advertising Program, I decided to shift gears to teaching.  There are several similarities between teaching and sales; you are aiding in the choices that people make and educating clients/students every day while keeping current in every aspect of the business.  I have developed a wonderful network of industry professionals to aid in my currency and have discovered my passion is extended to not only sales, but to the digital environment as well. Taking courses myself is of the utmost importance to me as I feel it is vital in bringing the most current and relevant information to our students.

Please state which courses you teach within the post-grad program, and why are you passionate about this course(s)?

I teach in the sales and digital areas of the program.  Sales is dear to my heart, not just because that is the role I had within the industry but also because it hones skills that are key to every position within our industry.  Digital is paramount in our industry, and in our lives, so I bring it into every class I teach and find it intriguing and absolutely exciting!  I enjoy finding out about the newest tools and tricks in the digital landscape and working them into the classroom.

How long have you been with Sheridan?

I have been working full time at Sheridan for 11 years, and 2 years part-time before that.  I enjoy working with the students and industry professionals.

What is your favourite part about Sheridan?

I am always learning … we have to in order to succeed in today’s business climate.  Sheridan provides the environment needed to continuously learn and then be able to pass along my learnings to those that want to work in the Advertising industry.  Sheridan is very student centered and I take great pride in seeing our students grow within the program and then become successful in our amazing Advertising business.

What do you think is the greatest strength of the post-grad program?

I believe the breadth of the program is crucial to success in this area of study.  Because this is such a fast-paced, ever-changing industry, our program offers insight, application and connections to every facet of Advertising.  Our faculty is exceedingly dedicated and we all work well together to provide our students with the best education to help them land where they would like to be within our business.

What advice would you give to someone who is considering a post-grad education in Advertising?

You get what you put into it.  I would suggest coming into this program with an open mind, ready for challenges and exceedingly valuable learning that will help them find their passion.  When someone finds their passion, it never feels like work … it’s fun!
